Freestyle Deck Shape and Features

The freestyle longboard deck is wide providing stable foot placement on any part of the board. Dimensions of a freestyle deck from Lost Coast Longboarding are typically 39.75in x 10in. The deck shape is symmetrical which allows the board to naturally go in either direction. This feature allows for a rider to ride switch when necessary. And it also makes it easier to just hop on the board and go.

The nose and tail of the freestyle longboard are rounded and provide a small kicktail which can be useful for any pop tricks. To someone who is not familiar with longboarding, the shape of a freestyle longboard may seem kind of odd.

The front and back of the freestyle longboard deck kind of look like a puzzle piece. This engineering allows for the wheels to have an empty space to enter while a rider is making a sharp turn or carving. Without this cut out shape, the wheels can make contact with the longboard deck during a sharp turn and may cause wheel bite.

Wheel bite is when the wheels are pinched between the longboard deck and the ground below. And this may cause the wheels to come to an instant halt, oftentimes causing a rider to fly off the board.

The surface of a freestyle longboard is often flat which allows for stable foot placement. Though it is not uncommon for a freestyle longboard to be slightly concave. This slight curve in the longboard deck hugs the riders foot giving them some added control to the board.

Freestyle Longboard Trucks

The trucks of a freestyle longboard are often mounted in a drop through style. This means that the trucks are mounted to the top of the longboard but they drop through the deck rather than be simply mounted solely on the underside of the board. This feature lowers the center of gravity of the longboard which is a feature that makes the freestyle longboard well suited for longboard slides.

A longboard slide is when the rider pushes the longboard sideways across the pavement while riding. A rider may choose to slide for many different reasons including speed control, drifting, rotating between normal and switch riding, and power slides. Sliding is an advanced technique that can be crucial to controlling yourself at high speeds.

Construction and Benefits

A freestyle longboard can be made of a variety of materials. Traditionally, skateboards are made of wood. Different brands and different companies use different types of wood to make longboards. The type of wood used in the construction of a longboard can affect the ride and performance of the board. If a rider is looking to have a very sturdy board that will carry momentum and speed well then a hardwood would be the recommended material. Lost Coast Longboarding uses a standard Canadian Maple for the construction of our longboards which is a strong wood that also provides a little flex.
