A downhill longboard shape is a longboard that is specifically designed for someone who is looking to reach high speeds while riding their longboard down steep hills. This is often called “bombing hills.” Downhill longboarding is a type of riding that is recommended for advanced riders with a lot of experience. When bombing hills it is highly recommended for a rider to use a helmet and full protection gear.
Downhill Longboard Features
The length and shape of a downhill longboard can vary. And many advanced downhill riders are very particular about their downhill longboard shape and dimensions. Most downhill longboards range from 33″ to 39″ long and are usually about 9″ wide.
Very high speeds can be achieved when riding a longboard downhill. Because of this there are many variables that can affect a rider and their equipment. A downhill longboard deck should be very sturdy because flex in a board can create an unstable platform at high speeds. Having a sturdy deck is also important when performing slides on a longboard. Sliding is the best way for a rider to slow down and control their speed when moving fast down hills.
Having an aerodynamic shape can also be an important factor when choosing a downhill longboard. Some aspects of a longboard deck that can be considered aerodynamic are flush mounted trucks and the shape of the deck itself. An aerodynamic longboard shape can have a rounded nose and a flat tail end.

Some of the other important variables in downhill longboarding are trucks, bushings, wheels, grip tape, bearings with built in spacers, and a toe stop. There are many companies that design these parts of the longboard
specifically for the extreme nature of downhill longboarding. When athletes build a custom downhill longboard they may spend up to $1,000 on these parts and specifications. Some athletes can easily hit speeds of 60+ mph and any part malfunction at that speed can be catastrophic for the rider.
