Bear River Skatepark in Steamboat Springs

The local skatepark in Steamboat Springs Colorado is called the Bear River Skatepark. This simple cement skatepark measures up at 9,700 sq. ft. and is made by Team Pain Skateparks. Bear River Skatepark provides a fun environment for beginners as well as advanced skaters. And the flow and transitions of the large bowl are good for longboarding in a skatepark.

Riders Thoughts: Bear River Skatepark in Steamboat Springs

The skatepark in Steamboat Springs seems pretty small when looking at it from the parking lot, but once you start skating the park opens up a little. The first part of the skatepark is a street skating platform with a number of different transitions and a variety of obstacles. Some obstacles include boxes, ramps, quarter pipes, ledges, a fire hydrant, a rail, and cones.

A wall with boxes, ledges, and coping creates a separation between the street section and the large bowl/vert section of the skatepark. This separation seems to be where most athletes start lines in the street section because it creates a good downhill momentum at the start of a run.

For me, the Big Bowl is the highlight of the skatepark in Steamboat Springs. It has both great flow and great transitions between the different depths of the bowl. The bowl is large with a very unique shape made of a variety of rounded corners and pockets. These different depths and transitions provide an ideal environment for some great cement surfing!

There are a number of different features that make this bowl such a good spot for longboarding. The size of the bowl is great because of the space between turns and pockets. This allows riders to choose which way they want to take a turn, opposed to having to skate the same line over and over or going in circles.

Another cool feature of this large bowl is the rounded “boob” obstacle in the center of the bowl. This is a cool feature because it is a smooth transition that riders can use to build speed in any direction during their run. Riders use this to build speed by using their body weight and momentum to pump the board while going over the obstacle.

The depth of the largest pocket on the bowl allows riders to go very fast and get about 10 feet up on the wall. Ceramic tile outlines the top 6 inches of this bowl and makes a satisfying sound to roll over at high speeds. The top of this bowl has metal coping, cement coping, and cement ledges but there are no roll ins here. So you’ll have to start inside the bowl unless you can drop in on a longboard.

The parking lot of the skatepark in Steamboat Springs is also locations of the start of the bike path. This path follows the river and ventures to downtown Steamboat Springs. It’s a fun path to put a few miles on your longboard after you spent some time checking out the skatepark. Most of the path is nice and smooth, but you’ll find a few bridges that are pretty rough.
