Chuckwalla Park and Snow Canyon Trail

With so much to see in Saint George, we decided to check out Chuckwalla Park and some of the trail nearby. This area has gorgeous scenery, awesome rock climbing opportunities and smooth paved paths perfect for longboarding! Although we managed to get a little bit of climbing in followed by a short run on the longboards, there is so much more to see in this area next time we’re here! Read on to see what we found at Chuckwalla Park and nearby paved Snow Canyon Trail.

Checking out Chuckwalla Park

Chuckwalla Park has several hiking trails and plenty of walls for rock climbing. The rock face walls are bolted in a number of spots for top roping or lead climbing. There is also another great rock climbing area just north of Chuckwalla called “Black Rocks.” Since we had our ropes, we decided to climb while we were here.climbing at chuckwalla park

From Chuckwalla. there is a paved path that runs both north and south from the parks’ parking area. This section of the path parallels SR-18 for about 7 miles. The paved path is very smooth, with some rolling hills, beautiful scenery and little traffic. Heading north on the trail from the Chuckwalla Park parking area is a great hill to bomb!

Heading south from Chuckwalla, in the opposite direction of the hill, you can take the trail system to the entrance of Snow Canyon State Park. The path in this direction follows a long steep narrow downhill route. This route crossed some intersections and seemed a bit dangerous on a board so we skipped it.

Snow Canyon Parkway Trail

So after checking out Chuckwalla, we parked at a parking area for the Snow Canyon Parkway Trail. There was a pond and people fishing here.

The paved path followed Snow Canyon Parkway for three miles towards the entrance of Snow Canyon State Park. This section of the path was relatively smooth with your normal cracks and bumps. Snow Canyon Trail was lined with attractive desert landscaping. And the feel of the path was a mellow cruise.

There are a few areas of Snow Canyon Trail that divert towards gated communities and golf courses. Some of these diversions, like the one below, are steep, curvy and fun downhills.

We followed the trail to the roundabout near Ivins. The roundabout was very artistic with really cool mustang statues. This is where we turned around. Snow Canyon Trail continues another mile and a half to the state park entrance.

More Longboarding in the Area

The city of St. George has a nice paved trail system that runs through the entire city. Snow Canyon Trail was just one section that we were able to check out. Another section of this awesome trail system that we cruised was the Santa Clara River Trail that leads to a great skatepark – Sk8 George Skatepark! For a skate sesh that’s a little less defined, we found an awesome neighborhood with hills and streets that seemed to be made for longboarding – Tonaquint Neighborhood.

While the writing was distracting, bits of the info were good. From the park, it looks like it is actually north to snow canyon? Isn’t the Hallyday Wash trail with? The one that leads to Dixie? I was hoping to run/ hike this trail soon, but I’m pretty confused now!

      Hey M,
There are multiple entrances to Snow Canyon State Park. From Chuckwalla we went south and turned right (west) on Snow Canyon Parkway and followed the path. I guess the road does turn north and leads to the south entrance 3 miles from Tawa Pond. We stayed on the paved trail but if you want to run and explore the trails more you might want to look at google maps and pick a route if you’re uncomfortable with figuring it out as you go. Have fun out there!
