Bishop Skatepark: Why You Should Visit

The Bishop Skatepark in Bishop California is a nice medium sized skatepark with a good variety of skate obstacles and features. It has an open layout and some banked turns, revealing opportunities for different lines. Cruising around the Bishop Skate Park on a longboard feels like you’re surfing the cement! Starting from the top it’s easy to gain speed quickly and roll into a carved turn to keep momentum.

First Impressions of the Bishop Skatepark:

The Bishop Skatepark has two large quarter pipes as a main feature. The quarter pipes and surrounding walls make for various banked turns which is great for riding a longboard in a skate park. This park has a nice open layout with multiple smooth transitions and a good flow. I also noticed that it was clean and not usually too crowded.

Pros:
Large banked turns with smooth transitions, a fun bowl, roll ins, nice atmosphere and a good flow.

Cons:
Sometimes there are too many little kids to get a good skate sesh in.

Know Before You Go:
There are pine trees lining one side of the skatepark which are great for shade but they drop a lot of needles. Bring a broom if you want to clear the debris before you skate. Also, bikes are not permitted.

Directions:
The Bishop Skatepark is located in the center of the Bishop City Park at: 688 N Main Street, Bishop, CA. From Main Street turn east onto Park Blvd right by Carl’s Jr. Follow the road past the ball fields and there’s a large parking lot. From there cross the foot bridge over the creek and you’ll see it.

Riders Thoughts: Bishop Skatepark

The open layout at the Bishop Skatepark along with the variety of obstacles and ramps create many lines to choose from while cruising around. One side of the skatepark has high vert walls with smooth transitions to the ground. From the top of this vert wall a skater can either drop in from the coping, or cruise to the lower level and take the ramp or banked turns into the open flat area. The large vert walls on this side of the park have some areas of coping and other areas with a smoother transition cement lip.

These vert walls make for one of the highlights of the Bishop Skatepark because their banked turns are great for pumping and building speed. This wall has a peninsula that protrudes making for a banked left turn on one side and another banked turn on the right side. This also helps to keep the flow of the park going in either direction.

using the obstacles at the bishop skatepark to create speed

There are a few obstacles in the flat, open section of the skatepark that help to maintain the flow, such as an angled pyramid box with a rail and a metal lipped box. This pyramid is great to use to pump and build speed after coming down from the wide ramp. Then, there is the interesting box that has smooth transitions on three sides with a moon shaped banked turn lined in coping on the other side.

On the perimeter of the flat section there is a pair of small steep humps with another cement box. There is one rail but there are not many other boxes or stairs to grind though there is coping in some areas.

On the other side of the Bishop Skatepark is the parks only bowl. The bowl is cool because it has coping along with a steep roll in. This bowl has kind of a funny shape, almost like a bean but not quite. There is a small steep hump that runs across the floor of this bowl that seems to kind of disrupt the flow of the bowl. But I did see numerous skaters rolling in and launching out of this part of the bowl.

The area surrounding this bowl is raised in comparison to the rest of the park allowing for a downhill feel in any direction from this bowl. There is also a large rounded box which comes up from the floor of the skatepark and is situated almost in the middle of the skatepark.

Overall, the Bishop Skatepark is a fun skatepark that is definitely worth stopping to shred if you’re in the area. The banked turns and elevated levels allow you to build up speed while the smooth transitions between the obstacles create a good flow to the park.
