Morro Bay Skateboard Museum

California’s Central Coast is a great place for skating – the weather is great, the local San Luis Obispo Skatepark is amazing and there are plenty of good streets to cruise. If you’re in the area, you have to check out The Morro Bay Skateboard Museum! The museum is located at 783 Market Avenue in Morro Bay, CA 93442. It is not only an awesome place to learn all about the history of skateboarding, but also provides an opportunity to see the history first hand!

At the Morro Bay Skateboard Museum you can see how the skateboard has evolved from a simple 2×4 with metal wheels to the more modern skateboard technologies that we’re used to today. The collection also includes many unique and experimental skateboard designs as well.

Checking Out the Morro Bay Skateboard Museum

A couple years ago we were able to meet Jack Smith, the owner of the Morro Bay Skateboard Museum. We learned a lot about his story, passion for skating and how he has impacted the history of skateboarding.

Some of Jack’s accomplishments include skateboarding the entire distance of the United States multiple times and holding a land speed record! He has successfully longboarded the length of the United States 3 times with a traditional longboard, and he was also the first person to cross the country on an electric skateboard. These are the boards he has used to skateboard across the country.

Since our first visit to the Morro Bay Skateboard Museum there have been some changes. First off, the entire museum has moved to a new location!

The museum moved up the hill from where it used to be. Although the museum seems a little bit smaller now, they have one of the best views in the town!

Also, now there is an awesome display on the history of Vans skateboarding shoes and their part in the history of skateboarding.

And the museum now has John Lennon’s original skateboard from 1964 on display!

The Morro Bay Skateboard Museum displays the most skateboards I have ever seen in a single collection, and Jack has the stories behind each board. There are over 200 boards in the collection!

Among the collection are some of the very first hand made skateboards dating back to the 1930’s as well as the classic boards you’ve seen in pictures and movies. You can see original Dog Town skateboards, Santa Cruz, Tony Hawk, collector’s editions, signed originals, concept boards, and even some modern experimental designs.

These are just a few of the unique boards in the museum that I think are interesting. One of the most extreme looking boards that I saw in the museum was this concept board made by BMW! I think the board looks awesome and the trucks are unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.

The Morro Bay Skateboard Museum displays the first hand history behind the sport of skateboarding and the evolution of the skateboard itself. After seeing the history and the impact that the people in this museum have had on the sport, I was honored when Jack mentioned displaying my personal  Lost Coast Longboarding board in the museum!
